Horan hat trick helps U.S. to upset Panama

Lindsey Horan scored a hat trick to help the United States down Panama 8-0 in Group A of the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship on Friday at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston, Texas.

With the result, both the U.S. and Costa Rica have advanced to the CWOQ semifinals.

The U.S. got off to a quick 1-0 start when Horan pounced on a loose ball to net the opener in the 3’.

Lynn Williams calmly rounded Panama GK Yenith Bailey and swept in a left-footed shot to double the advantage to 2-0 in the 15’.

Horan got her second three minutes later to extend it to 3-0 when another ball squirted loose in front of goal.

Williams then played the role of playmaker by crossing for Rose Lavelle, who had an easy push into net to stretch the lead to 4-0 in the 21’.

The Panamanian defense would firm up until the 70’ when the U.S. broke through again 5-0, this time from Christian Press.

Two minutes later it was Jessica McDonald making it 6-0, firing in a shot off a deflection.

Tobin Heath added her name to the scorehseet in the 79’ with a strong right-footed finish, before Horan scored her third and final goal of the night to complete the 8-0 scoreline.
