Liverpool vs Manchester United: Gary Neville winds up Jamie Carragher and calls Brandon Williams a cannibal

They may not like to admit it, but Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville are now very good friends.

When they were footballers they were rivals, though, as Carragher played for Liverpool and Neville was at Manchester United.

The two clubs face each other on Sunday at Anfield as Liverpool look to continue their pursuit of a first Premier League crown, while Man United will want to inflict a first league defeat of the season on the Reds and stay in touch with the top four.

It’s known as the big fixture in English football so there’s unsurprisingly been a lot of build-up to it.

Part of that build-up includes Carragher and Neville winding each other up, and of course they were at it again ahead of this weekend’s clash.

It all started when Neville took to Twitter to praise Red Devils youngster Brandon Williams on Thursday morning, as the youngster impressed playing against Wolves in the FA Cup.

Neville suggested the 19-year-old was like a cannibal in the way he plays with a never-say-die attitude.

He wrote on the social media platform: “I like Brandon Williams. What I like about him specifically is he has that look in his eye of someone that would eat his opponent’s nose to win the match.

“Keep going kid! Oh, he can play football which is always a bonus.”

Minutes later, Neville tweeted a video of Carragher scoring two own goals in a Premier League match against Man United in September 1999, a clash the Red Devils won 3-2.

Neville went on to suggest that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side could get the three points at Liverpool this Sunday – as long as they have a goal scorer as good as Carragher to call upon!

“Can’t wait for Sunday and ending this run,” he tweeted.

“Just need our strikers to get across the near post on crosses and attack the ball in the six yard box like this beaut [Carragher] did all those years ago!”

Of course, Carragher was never going to let that slide and hit back with his own reminders of when Neville came up short against Liverpool.

Carragher replied: “Nearly as bad as you getting bullied by [Robbie] Fowler, fouling [Steven] Gerrard for a pen, handball for a free kick from [Danny] Murphy & Fowler flicking it over your head & scoring!”

There are still three days to go before the match so the back-and-forth is sure to continue.

And just imagine what Carragher and Neville will be like with each other when the match begins…
