When you’ve scored more than 600 goals for one club, singling out the best presents quite a task.

Especially when it’s Lionel Messi, and so many of them are utterly spellbinding.

Remember when he just ran through the entire Real Madrid defence at the Bernebeu in 2011, or when he danced past Athletic Bilbao in the 2015 Copa del Rey final?

None of them beat this goal against Getafe

But even by his astronomical standards, there is one strike which stands out above the rest.

Barcelona fans are overwhelmingly in agreement that the little Argentine’s wonder goal against Getafe on this day in 2007 is his best.

In 2019, more than 500,000 fans were asked to pick the greatest goal in Barcelona’s history, and Messi’s remarkable solo effort 13-years ago took almost half of the vote.

Back in 2007, a 19-year-old Messi was already emerging as someone who could become one of the greatest players in history.

But before setting his eyes on global domination, Messi had to dethrone a legend at home.

Argentina never thought it would see the likes of Diego Maradona again, nor did most of the football world, until Messi burst onto the scene.

The parallels were immediately obvious: the touch, the speed, the genius.

But nobody, they thought, could recreate Maradona’s ‘Goal of the Century’ against England at the 1986 World Cup.

No, not that one. The other one.

That was until Getafe came to the Nou Camp on April 18, 2007.

Like Maradona, Messi picked up the ball inside his own half, and quickly escaped from two players with some remarkable close control.

The little Argentine burst down the right at blistering speed, working his way inside with the ball glued to his left foot.

The similarities are just uncanny

Two more challenges arrived, Messi cut inside one and went outside the other, identically to his legendary compatriot 21-years earlier.

Not content with beating four, Messi rounded the goalkeeper, just as Maradona did, and put the ball into the net from a tight angle.

They even wheeled off in the exact same direction to celebrate!

It was so good that most people forget Getafe actually dumped Barca out of the Copa del Rey that year with a 4-0 victory in the second leg.

Messi’s goal didn’t carry the same sort of significance as Maradona’s strike, which helped Argentina to World Cup glory.

But it confirmed to the world that there was a new Argentine who could become even greater than the one which went before.
