Jose Mourinho unhappy with Dele Alli FA charge, reveals transfer plans not in same league as Chelsea, Harry

Jose Mourinho is unhappy with the punishment handed to midfielder Dele Alli.

The Tottenham midfielder will be missing from the line-up when Manchester United visit on Friday night as he is serving a one-match suspension due to a social media post he made about coronavirus in February.

And his manager feels it was nothing compared to other lockdown breaches.

“I don’t think he deserves a one-match ban,” he said.

“Lots of people made mistakes during this lockdown period. I am one of the examples.

“In my case I believe it was a very, very, very small mistake that was not reported in the right way.

“But lots of people in football, and even outside football, made lots of mistakes. I don’t like these kinds of contradictions.

“I feel that it’s for everybody or it’s for nobody. It’s quite unfair for a kid who made a mistake and apologised for it.”

Alli received a £50,000 fine and must attend an educational course.

The manager was speaking ahead of Spurs’ first Premier League game since fixtures were halted in March.

Team news

Giovani Lo Celso is a doubt.

The 24-year-old picked up an injury just before the season’s suspension and was unable to receive daily treatment because of the lockdown.

“Because of the rules, his injury is not in need of surgery but needed daily treatment, close contact with physios and fitness coaches working with him, but that was not possible.

“So two months he was injured but he couldn’t recover from it. When the training ground opened, and he started treatment, it was not enough to have him 100 per cent.

“The last few days training, available tomorrow I think so. Tomorrow we’re going to test if he is able to play.”

But Mourinho did confirm Harry Kane, Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min, who all had surgery earlier this year, will start against United.

On Kane’s fitness

“Harry Kane hasn’t played football for more than six months. So again, he is working extremely well. I can tell you no problem, he’s going to start the game. Does Harry have 90, 80, 70, 60 minutes, I don’t know.

“Only the game will tell us that. Is he on the top of his form? We don’t know. It’s not a little training session with our friends from Norwich that’s going to tell us the answer.

“But for him he’s around six months without playing a football match but he works extremely well. He’s an amazing professional and he’s going to start tomorrow.”

On Jan Vertonghen’s contract situation

“Jan is a fantastic guy, fantastic professional. His love for the club, his respect for the club, is never in doubt. Of course he’s committed with us, of course he’s ready to play tomorrow.

“We and him want him to be with us until at least the end of the season and hopefully Jan and his people and my club can agree that. But speaking now until the end of his contract, in the end of June, he’s here to help and of course we totally trust him.”

On Eric Dier’s FA decision

“I forgot that one. I forgot that one because it was such a strong movement at the time from the football community and others supporting Eric Dier.

“With every professional, being a coach, player, former player, every pundit was so supportive of him that the critics were not in existence. The support was huge.

“People with great responsibilities in the game said they would do exactly as he did. It was proven there was no physical contact. The person didn’t feel at any moment that anything was going to happen. He’s trying to look and help his brother.

“If this story is still alive, it surprises me very, very much because we now, even with Marcus Rashford, have the proof that what is right is right. Sometimes this is really, really powerful in support of the right causes. I thought that this was with that case and it’s not that case I would be very disappointed with that.”

Transfer plans

Mourinho is hoping for additions, but stressed Tottenham will not be in the same league as rivals Chelsea and Man United, who have signed Timo Werner and Bruno Fernandes respectively.

“You have now examples already of clubs investing and making important movements in the market and we are still nine matches away from the end of the season.

“But I think we are going always to be very balanced which is what Tottenham normally is.

“Would I expect us not to do anything and to stay exactly with the same squad that we have in this moment? My answer is no.

“I expect us to do some little important things and if we do our little important things and we improve in two, three positions that we need to improve in the squad, I am completely open to the challenge, I am completely supportive to the board, to the owners.

“And let’s go for it. But in this moment I am not even thinking about that because I am focused on these nine matches.

“It’s obvious for us that there are a certain level of options that are not for us. We have to admit that. But that’s a normal situation.

“So United bought Bruno Fernandes, Chelsea’s buying Ziyech and Werner, they can do what they want. It’s not our problem. We focus on ourselves.

“We are going to improve our squad in the way we can do it. No problem.”
