How a conversation with one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaches saved Fred’s Manchester United career

Fred’s transformation at Manchester United this season has been nothing short of remarkable.

The Brazilian midfielder had a dismal first season at Old Trafford following his £47million move from Shakhtar Donetsk and was criticised for his ineffectiveness on the pitch.

However, this season he has emerged one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s most important players – and according to The Times, this is believed to be down a conversation he had with one of the club’s new coaches, Martyn Pert.

Having missed the first four matches of the season, Fred was seemingly going to be a bit-part player for Solskjaer throughout the campaign.

Tensions between the pair escalated further when he gave an interview with UOL Esporte in Brazil in which he claimed there were ‘problems’ in the United dressing room under the Norwegian.

It is believed his remarks did not go down with Solskjaer or some of the staff at the club, but Pert, who is fluent in Portuguese, took him to one side and told him to be more wise about what he says in public.

The suspension of the Premier League due to the coronavirus came at a bad time for the Red Devils, who were on an 11-match unbeaten streak and picking up the momentum for a top four surge.

Giving COVID-19 the red card

The quicker we work together to stop coronavirus spreading, the sooner we can get back into the pub, the gyms and stadiums and arenas to see live sport again…

1. Practice social distancing by remaining two metres apart from others.

2. Wash your hands regularly

3. Self isolate if you have a fever or cough

Stay at home if you have either:

  • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
  • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

Everyone should do what they can to stop coronavirus spreading.

And Fred would have been a contender for the club’s Player of the Season if the campaign had continued.

Speaking in February, Solskjaer explained why Fred struggled in his first season at the club.

He said: “He [Fred] struggled with the language last season, and to be honest I would not have expected that to be a problem when he came in because Jose was the manager, so he probably communicated with him really well.

“One of our coaches, Martyn Pert, has come in from Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS and he is fluent in Portuguese, so it’s easier for Fred to communicate with us all now.”
