Ex-Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford can barely contain his passion when he talks about Marcelo Bielsa.

“I’m obsessed with him being obsessed,” Beckford tells talkSPORT.

The eccentric Argentine has breathed new life into the historic club over the past two seasons, giving them hope of a Premier League return after 16 years away from the English top flight.

From blue buckets to powerpoint presentations, ‘El Loco’ has endeared himself to the Yorkshire faithful and become something of a cult hero.

Indeed, a banner reading ‘Bielsa is God’ flew over Elland Road at one point last season.

The 64-year-old would achieve legendary status if he secures promotion for the Whites this season – and only a total disaster would stop them.

Leeds are eight points clear of third-place Brentford with just seven favourable fixtures remaining, although Bielsa will be wary of last season’s late collapse.

If they do succeed, it will be down to his obsessive attention to detail – which Beckford totally admires.

The former forward told talkSPORT: “He is a phenomenal person. He doesn’t look at football the same way any normal person does.

“He’s obsessed with football, he’s obsessed with tactics, he’s obsessed with getting it right every opportunity he gets.

“He doesn’t leave anything to chance.

“You can see the frustration when somebody doesn’t pay attention to his points.

“He’s got these thoughts in his mind and nobody can tell him anything else – because he’s a genius.”
