Meanwhile, Frank Lampard’s men finished second in their group with a 2-1 win against an under-strength Lille side at Stamford Bridge – Tammy Abraham and Cesar Azpilicueta getting the goals.

But there were six more matches across the continent on Tuesday night with a number of sides vying for a place in the knockouts.

talkSPORT.com brings you a round-up of the best action from the Champions League.

The most exciting race to reach the last-16 came in Group F with both Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund going for second place behind Barcelona, who had already qualified.

Inter appeared to have an advantage when Barca decided to rest the likes of Lionel Messi and other key players with the Italian side also having home advantage.

Dortmund were playing at home to minnows Slavia Prague but needed a slip-up from Inter to stand any chance of avoiding Europa League football.

England international Jadon Sancho’s goal as well as Julian Brandt’s fierce strike ensured the Bundesliga club did what they needed at their end as the won 2-1.

And amazingly, an under-strength Barca team managed to beat Antonio Conte’s Inter 2-1.

Romelu Lukaku cancelled out Carles Perez’s strike but Ansu Fati’s long range effort sealed a famous win for Barcelona’s fringe players and more importantly for Dortmund’s status in the competition.

Fati also broke a record for being the youngest goalscorer in Champions League history at 17 years and 40 days.

Last season’s semi-finalists Ajax were another team to suffer a shock exit as they lost 1-0 at home to Valencia.

Ajax were in pole position to finish top of their group but could not find the net with Rodrigo’s goal proving decisive. The Spanish side came top of Group H ahead of Chelsea.

Former Arsenal defender Gabriel was sent off for a headbutt on ex-Southampton star Dusan Tadic late on.

Napoli were the other team to make it out of Group E with Liverpool as they romped to a 4-0 win at home to Genk – Arkadiusz Milik’s hat-trick and Dries Mertens’ penalty sealing the easy win.

And in Group G, Lyon joined Red Bull Leipzig in the last-16 after the two sides played out a 2-2 draw in France.

Benfica beat Zenit St Petersburg 3-0 in the other game.
