For the second time in the team’s history, the Portland Timbers have won a trophy.
The Timbers won the MLS is Back tournament Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Orlando City SC. Both of Portland’s goals games from center backs
Amid the coronavirus pandemic, in lieu of championship T-shirts, the team was initially given champions masks.
The win puts a cap on a month’s stretch in the Disney World bubble where Portland saw new stars emerge and veterans play at a high level. It saw the Timbers come together better than any other team coming out of quarantine, and Portland stayed on the front foot throughout the tournament.
Yet it was still an unexpected run. Portland was not expected to be among the favorites to make it to the championship game, let alone win it all. Yet the Timbers did it. They kept finding different ways to win and had different players step up in big moments.
The MLS is Back trophy may not hold the same significance as the MLS Cup, but in a strange year, the Timbers players and coaches still showed plenty of excitement as Diego Valeri and Co. raised the trophy after the match.
