NYCFC falls to the UANL Tigres in CONCACAF Champions League action

Eduardo Vargas scored in the third minute of second half stoppage time to lift UANL Tigres to a 1-0 win over New York City FC in the first leg of the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

Early on it was the Nahuel Guzman show, as the Tigres GK saved a shot from Ismael Tajouri in the 12’ and then another stop of an Heber effort in the 26’.

Momentum started to shift as play entered in the second half, with Tigres on the front foot and carving out scoring chances.

As play entered the final quarter-hour, New York City FC tried to wrestle back control and nearly broke the deadlock through Alex Mitrita.

Back at the other end a pair of chances fell for Andre-Pierre Gignac, the first a stinging, dipping attempt that was saved by New York City FC GK Sean Johnson, and the second a shot that the Frenchman skied over the crossbar.

Just when it looked like a scoreless draw was in the cards, Vargas pounced on the rebound of a Gignac shot and fired in past Johnson to give the Monterrey club the victory.
