Atlanta United falls to Club America, 3-0

Club America scored three first half goals to power past Atlanta United 3-0 in the first leg of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday night at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The result improves Club America’s all-time record in the SCCL quarterfinals to 6W-1D-0L.

Club America enjoyed a strong start and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11’ with a sizzling left-footed strike from Leonardo Suarez.

Two minutes later the seven-time Concacaf club champions doubled their lead 2-0 on a fine left-footed effort from Henry Martin.

Atlanta United looked to respond and Ezequiel Barco had a good crack at goal in the 24’, but was denied by Club America GK Oscar Jimenez.

Club America still remained on the front foot, though, and Bruno Valdez’s thumping header in the 36’ off a corner kick extended the lead to 3-0.

Atlanta United had a much more positive second half and Gonzalo Martinez had a trio of looks at goal, but on two attempts hit the crossbar.

In the end, Las Aguilas nailed down the clean sheet victory to take a commanding lead into the second leg.
