Andre-Pierre Gignac bagged a brace to steer Tigres UANL into the Final of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League with a 3-0 victory over CD Olimpia of Honduras in the semifinals on Saturday night at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
Gignac now has a Tigres record 13 goals in the SCCL, as the Liga MX club advanced to their fourth SCCL final in five years.
Tigres enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the first half, but were having difficulty breaking down what was a very solid Olimpia defense.
The Felinos kept plugging away and just moments before halftime they swung the momentum of the match firmly in their favor.
Olimpia GK Edrick Menjivar had to come off his line to punch away a corner kick, with the ball cleared initially to Tigres DF Carlos Salcedo, whose acrobatic overhead kick forced a headed goal-line clearance that glanced off the crossbar.
The rebound fell to Luis Quinones, who fired a shot toward goal, striking the arm of Olimpia’s Deybi Flores on the goal-line, resulting in a penalty and red card for Flores. Gignac stepped up and coolly converted the spot kick in the 45+4’ to hand Tigres a 1-0 halftime lead.
Olimpia looked to answer early in the second half and had a chance through Jerry Bengtson, but the shot rolled wide.
Tigres gained further control minutes later in the 57’, as a handball in the area resulted in a second penalty, and once again Gignac fired in from the spot to double the lead to 2-0.
The Mexican club then capped their night in the 78’ when a ball swung in by Gignac was deflected into the Olimpia goal by defender Elvin Casildo, completing the 3-0 scoreline.
