Santa Lucia of Guatemala rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to down Puerto Rico’s Metropolitan 2-1 in the second leg of their 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf League Preliminary Round series.
With the result, Santa Lucia advances to the Round of 16 with a 5-1 win on aggregate goals.
Metropolitan could not have asked for a better start and suddenly were just two goals away from evening the aggregate when Giancarlo Maldonado’s exquisite first touch and subsequent right-footed shot beat Santa Lucia GK Luis Moran to make it 1-0 to the home side, giving the club their first ever SCL goal.
Santa Lucia looked to respond right away to stymie the Metropolitan comeback attempt and Charles Martinez nearly pulled his side level with a shot that sailed wide in the 23’.
Martinez remained a menace for the visitors and made a big play toward the end of the half by earning a penalty for his side, which was then calmly converted by Isaac Acuna in the 42’ to make it 1-1 in the match and 4-1 on aggregate.
Santa Lucia looked to be on the verge of taking the lead in the match early in the second half in the 49’ via the penalty spot, but Metropolitan GK Sebastian Uranga came up with a massive save and denied Acuna his second conversion of the night.
The second Santa Lucia goal would come though in the 62’ with Victor Guay making it 2-1 in the game with a right-footed finish and 5-1 on aggregate.
From there, the Santa Lucia defense would keep the Metropolitan attack at bay to nail down the win and a spot in the next round.
