Portland ties Club America on last second goal

Felipe Mora scored with mere seconds remaining to earn the Portland Timbers a 1-1 draw with Club America in the first leg of the 2021 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

The match begin with lots of energy and Martinez took the first shot on goal in the 23’ that Portland GK Jeff Attinella was able to deflect.

While Portland certainly brought energy to their attack, they were kept in check by Club America defense in the first half.

What seemed like a scoreless first half turned in a penalty kick for the visitors due to a foul on Richard Sanchez, and Martinez calmly sank the ball in the back of the net to give the seven-time CONCACAF champions a 1-0 lead.

The Timbers looked to respond as Dairon Asprilla made his way through three defenders and curled a shot that glanced off the post in the 50’.

Several chances followed for Portland, first as Yimmi Chara tried with a left-footed volley that bounced wide, then a Larrys Mabiala header off a corner kick that went wide.

It looked like veteran GK Guillermo Ochoa and the Club America defense were going to claim the victory, but a handball resulted in a penalty for Portland, and Mora easily converted from the spot in the 90+7’ to bring the final score to a 1-1 draw.
