Kacper Przybylko scored twice to catapult the Philadelphia Union to a 3-0 win over Atlanta United in the first leg of the 2021 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.
Przybylko is now the leading scorer in the 2021 SCCL, with four goals in three matches.
Przybylko’s remarkable night could not have been possible without the counterpart defense of Philadelphia GK Andre Blake, who defended his goal in spectacular fashion.
The 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup Golden Glove winner from Jamaica made five saves within the first 45 minutes, denying Jurgen Damm, Emerson Hyndman, Marcelino Moreno and Josef Martinez. This kept things scoreless going into halftime.
Atlanta GK Brad Guzan showed he has a few skills by blocking a shot-on-goal by Przybylko in the 56’.
The resultant corner kick in the 57’ left Guzan looking helpless as the ball made its’ way through the wall of players, and found Przybylko waiting at the back post, redirecting it past a bewildered Guzan and into net for a 1-0 lead.
Atlanta United tried to strike right back as Santiago Sosa sent a right-footed shot that grazed the crossbar.
Major Atlanta United miscommunication led to a Philadelphia break in the 73’ as Przybylko smashed a shot past a confused looking Guzan and into the back of the net to bring the Union’s lead to 2-0.
Philadlephia would then sink the “nail in the coffin” in the 86’ when Przybylko fed the ball to Anthony Fontana, who rifled it past Guzan and into the net for a stammering 3-0 final score. What a spankin’ for Atlanta United … a team that failed to make to the playoffs in 2020 and has simply seen a downward spiral since it’s inaugural season.
