Honduran club Olimpia recorded their first ever Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League victory in a knockout round match with a 2-1 triumph over the Montreal Impact in the first leg of the 2020 SCCL quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
Olimpia overcame an early injury to GK Edrick Menjivar and then silenced the home fans in the 15’ as a Leonardo Garrido header found the running Jerry Bengtson and the veteran FW finished for a 1-0 Olimpia lead.
Olimpia had all the momentum and they struck for another goal in the 41’ with a textbook counterattack that ended with Jorge Benguche’s strong finish for a 2-0 advantage.
The Impact sought a response and pulled a goal back in style, 2-1, in the 47’ on a long-range volley from Saphir Taider.
The hosts threw numbers forward in hopes of an equalizer and looked set to do it through Anthony Jackson-Hamel in the 77’, only to see the header miss wide.
