Honduras leave Gold Cup with win over rival El Salvador

Honduras picked up a 4-0 win against rivals El Salvador on the final Group C matchday in front of 22,503 spectators at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

Felix Crisanto sent a warning shot from distance that was saved by El Salvador goalkeeper Henry Hernandez in the 31st minute.

On the opposite end of the field, Carlos Portillo had one of the best chances for El Salvador but was denied by Honduras keeper Luis Lopez in the 41st minute.

The teams went to their locker rooms scoreless at halftime.

Jorge Alvarez broke the deadlock with a rocket from the penalty arc to place Honduras in the lead in the 59th minute.

Rubilio Castillo doubled the lead in the 65th minute with a clinical finish inside the box.

Bryan Acosta received a long ball that he would convert into a third goal for Honduras in the 75th minute.

Emilio Izaguirre drove in the fourth goal of the night in the 90th minute to cap off the night.

With his 19th Gold Cup appearances, Maynor Figueroa passed Boniek Garcia for most matches by a Honduran national in the tournament.

The result signifies El Salvador’s exit from the tournament and gives Curacao’s first appearance in the knockout stage.
