Costa Rica completed their 2020 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying championship on a high note with a 5-0 victory over the Dominican Republic in Group A.
Costa Rica got things going just shy of the half-hour mark when an attempted clearance from a Dominican Republic defender spun into the air, allowing Manfred Ugalde to seize his chance and send a header into net for a 1-0 Costa Rica lead.
The goal instilled the Ticos with even more confidence and Bernald Alfaro doubled the margin to 2-0 in the 43’ when he received a pass from Gerson Torres and fired in a right-footed shot.
The Dominican Republic looked to respond in the 51’ and Josue Baez was on the verge of pulling a goal back, only to see Costa Rica GK Patrick Sequeira make a reaction save. The rebound fell to Nowend Lorenzo, but once again Sequeira was there for the stop.
Costa Rica wanted to quell any hopes of a Dominican Republic comeback and Randall Leal dutifully obliged in the 60’ by receiving a pass and hammering a right-footed shot past Dominican Republic GK Alessandro Baroni to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Leal tried his luck from distance again 10 minutes later in the 70’ and it yielded a 4-0 scoreline for his side, with the shot glancing off the body of Dominican Republic DF Brian Lopez and into net.
Less than two minutes later it was 5-0 to Costa Rica, this time DF Aaron Salazar did the damage with an excellent solo run that ended with a right-footed shot that beat Baroni.
The Costa Rican defense took over from there to close things out and collect their first three points of the tournament.
