Club America move-on despite loss to Atlanta United

Club America advanced to the semifinals of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League despite a 1-0 defeat to Atlanta United in their quarterfinal second leg on Wednesday night at Exploria Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

With the result, Club America win the series 3-1 on aggregate and advance to the tournament’s final four for the first time since 2018.

It was a very back-and-forth to start, with a Richard Sanchez free kick in the 9’ sailing just over the crossbar for Club America, followed five minutes later by Atlanta United’s Franco Escobar cracking a shot that was saved by Ochoa.

Ochoa would come to the rescue again in the 24’ with an excellent save from an Ezequiel Barco close-range attempt.

Atlanta United GK Brad Guzan was just as good at the other end when he was called on to save a hard strike from Sebastian Cordova in the 34’.

The stalemate continued into the second half with each team keen to pick the other’s lock.

Atlanta United looked poised for a breakthrough in the 68’, but twice Ochoa denied Erick Torres to keep it scoreless.

The MLS side were finally able to find a way past Ochoa in the 82’ when 19-year-old Jackson Conway scored on his first team debut, taking a George Bello cross and heading into net to make it 3-1.

However, Club America were able to keep things in control the rest of the way to secure the needed result to reach the next stage.
