Canada scored twice in the first half to down Mexico 2-0 and earn a first-place finish in Group B of the 2020 Concacaf Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship on Tuesday at HEB Park in Edinburg, Texas.
With the result, Canada will face Costa Rica in the semifinals, while Mexico will meet the United States.
It was a hard-fought start between the two teams, and in need of a spark, Canada turned to the international goalscoring record-maker herself, Christine Sinclair, who fired in her 186th national team goal with a right-footed finish to make it 1-0 Canada in the 26’.
Canada looked to build off that momentum and just seconds before the halftime whistle, Shelina Zadorsky snuck in a shot in the 45+1’ to double the lead 2-0.
Canada was also getting a strong performance at the other end, as GK Stephanie Labbe made a superb save from a Kiana Palacios shot in the 53’, followed by another key stop on a Daniela Espinosa effort in the 76’.
In the end, the Canadian defense kept Mexico at bay to record their third straight clean sheet victory.
