Liga Deportiva Alajuelense are champions of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League thanks to a 3-2 victory over Costa Rican rivals Deportivo Saprissa in the Final on Wednesday night at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
It is the first ever SCL crown for Alajuelense and makes them the third Costa Rican club to win the title, following in the footsteps of CS Herediano in 2018 and Saprissa in 2019.
Of the two sides, Saprissa had the stronger start and were first to have a go at goal with a shot in the 12’ from Michael Barrantes requiring a big save from Alajuelense GK Leonel Moreira.
Six minutes later, though, in the 18’ Saprissa would break the deadlock when a Daniel Colindres shot was initially punched away by Moreira, only for the ball to hit Christian Bolanos square in the chest and roll into net for a 1-0 Saprissa lead.
Alajuelense would respond in kind in the 33’ with an excellent build-up that ended with Adrian Martinez squaring for Barlon Sequeira, who pushed a shot into net to make it a 1-1 affair.
The momentum was with Alajuelense to end the first half and they carried that into the second stanza, leading to the go-ahead goal in the 63’ when Yurguin Roman swung in a left-footed free kick into the top right corner of net to give Alajuelense their first lead of the night at 2-1.
The home side were flying with confidence and Honduran MF Alex Lopez extended the advantage to 3-1 in the 66’ with a strong right-footed finish that beat Saprissa GK Aaron Cruz.
Saprissa were not about to throw in the towel and Marvin Angulo cut the deficit to 3-2 with a right-footed strike from outside the area in the 87’.
In the end, Alajuelense would hold firm and nail down the victory to earn the club their first SCL title.
